Organizing student projects with startup tools

I am supervising several student projects. Often it is left to the student what tools they use to communicate and organize their project. But because of their lack in experience that often ends in the use of email, MS Word and paper.

So this term I introduced the students of my projects to communication and project management tool chains as they are currently state of the art in software engineering.

Even though students were free to use other tools I strongly recommend them to use the following (free) tools.

Learning Dashboards for Students

A dashboard is a visual display of the most important information needed to achieve one or more objectives; consolidated and arranged on a single screen so the information can be monitored at a glance.

In learning contexts a dashboard usually displays a learner’s online activity and learning progress in form of points, grades or badges.

Dashboards are a standard tool in fitness trackers and also on some commercial learning platforms like Kahn Academy or CodeCademy. Yet, in institutional learning at schools and universities dashboards are not widely available. However there are some early approaches and research projects, which I present here.
